1953 · Iranian government (Mosaddegh; CIA/MI6-backed coup) vs Royalist/coup forces (Shah)

A CIA- and MI6-orchestrated coup in August 1953 (Operation Ajax) that overthrew Iran's democratically elected prime minister Mohammad Mosaddegh and restored the Shah's power. Roughly 300 died in Tehran's street fighting; the coup reshaped Iranian politics for decades.
