A March 1979 uprising and army mutiny in Herat against Afghanistan's communist government, during which Soviet advisers were among those killed. The regime retook the city after aerial bombardment, leaving an estimated 3,000 to 25,000 dead and accelerating the slide toward Soviet intervention.
