A 27-day siege and assault on the Syrian city of Hama in February 1982 by Hafez al-Assad's army and Defense Companies to crush a Muslim Brotherhood uprising. Casualty estimates range from 5,000 to 40,000, making it one of the deadliest single acts of state violence in modern Middle Eastern history.
