In January 1599, Spanish forces under Vicente de Zaldivar stormed the mesa-top Acoma Pueblo in retaliation for the killing of Spanish soldiers, killing an estimated 600-800 Acoma and condemning survivors to servitude and amputations; Juan de Onate was later banished for the cruelty.
