1486 · Aztec Empire vs Huastec peoples
Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire exploited internal divisions, indigenous allies, and epidemic disease.
Hernán Cortés arrived at Tenochtitlan in 1519 with 600 men, capturing Emperor Montezuma II as hostage. Montezuma's death and Cortés's retreat in the Night of Sorrows (June 1520) preceded Cortés's return with Tlaxcalan allies. Epidemic smallpox devastated the Aztec capital. The 93-day Siege of Tenochtitlan (May-August 1521) methodically starved the city. Cuauhtémoc's capture in August 1521 ended organized resistance.
Aztec collapse within two years—facilitated by disease, indigenous alliances, and Spanish firepower—triggered Spanish America's foundation. The conquest introduced European infectious diseases killing millions.
