What happened

Following Huayna Capac's death (1525), his sons Huáscar and Atahualpa disputed imperial succession. Military conflict erupted between Huáscar (controlling Cusco) and Atahualpa (controlling northern territories). Atahualpa's forces, better positioned militarily, defeated Huáscar. The civil war lasted approximately seven years. Atahualpa's victory came just as Spanish forces arrived.

Why it mattered

The Inca succession war devastated imperial unity and military capacity just as Spanish conquered. Atahualpa's military preoccupation enabled Spanish recruitment of anti-Atahualpa factions.
