Post-Classic Maya hegemonic conflict established Mayapan's dominance over Yucatan peninsula.

Mayapan, a city-state in western Yucatan, challenged Chichen Itza's hegemony in the 12th century. Military conflict resulted in Chichen Itza's decline and Mayapan's rise as the peninsula's dominant power. The war involved alliances with neighboring states and mercenary forces. Mayapan organized a confederated governance system for the peninsula.

Mayapan victory established a new hegemonic center for Yucatan. The confederate system temporarily unified Post-Classic Maya territories.
