Spanish Reconquista of Pueblo Territory

1692 – 1696 · Spanish Empire vs Pueblo peoples

Spanish reconquest of New Mexico after the successful Pueblo Revolt (1692-1696).

Following the 1680 Pueblo Revolt, Spanish colonists fled New Mexico. Governor Diego de Vargas led the reconquest beginning in 1692. Spanish forces reoccupied Pueblo settlements and reasserted colonial authority. However, reconquest treaties granted greater Pueblo autonomy than initial colonization.

The reconquest reestablished Spanish control but with modifications favorable to Pueblos. The outcome demonstrated indigenous negotiating power and influenced Spanish colonial policy.
