Ancestral Puebloan Conflicts

1150 – 1300 · Ancestral Puebloans

Pre-Columbian Southwestern North American pueblos engaged in warfare before the Ancestral Puebloan period's decline.

Ancestral Puebloans (Anasazi) of the Southwest developed fortified pueblo settlements and evidence of inter-settlement conflicts. Archaeological evidence indicates violence, defensive architecture, and migration patterns suggesting conflict-driven displacement. The 12th-13th century droughts and subsequent migration disrupted pueblo networks. Violence indicators include skeletal trauma and site destruction.

Inter-pueblo conflicts and environmental stress contributed to the migration and reorganization of Southwestern peoples. These conflicts presaged historic Pueblo political fragmentation.
