Aztec Expansion

1345 – 1500 · Aztec Empire vs Mesoamerican tribes

Mexica/Aztec imperial expansion conquered dozens of Mesoamerican city-states through military campaigns.

The Aztec Empire, centered at Tenochtitlan, expanded through military conquest under successive emperors. Montezuma I (1440-1468) launched systematic campaigns against neighboring kingdoms, establishing tributary relationships. Subsequent emperors expanded the empire to encompass over 600 subject city-states. Aztec strategy combined direct military conquest with tributary diplomacy. The empire extracted tribute in goods, labor, and captives for sacrifice.

Aztec imperial expansion created the largest Mesoamerican political unit before Spanish conquest. The tributary system's oppressive burden motivated indigenous allies to support Cortés.
