1971 · Pakistan vs Bangladesh vs India
West Pakistan's genocide in East Bengal (1971) killed 300,000-3 million and created Bangladesh—independence through massive atrocity.
East Pakistan (East Bengal, 98% Muslim) was separated from West Pakistan by 1,000 miles and dominated politically and economically by West. Bangladeshi nationalists (Awami League) won elections (1970) but were marginalized. West Pakistan cracked down brutally (1971): Pakistani military and militias massacred 300,000-3 million Bangladeshis (estimates vary). Rape was systematized as a weapon (300,000+ women raped). 10+ million refugees fled to India. India intervened militarily (December 1971), defeated Pakistani forces. East Pakistan became independent Bangladesh.
Bangladesh's independence war demonstrated how ethnic nationalism could overcome religious (Islamic) unity. The genocide showed how postcolonial states could implode into atrocity. The systematic rape showed how sexual violence could be weaponized in modern warfare. India's military intervention was decisive but also created India-Pakistan tensions (three wars). Modern Bangladesh became independent but inherited war trauma, refugee camps, and economic underdevelopment. The war's massive scale (3+ million killed) made it among the bloodiest of the 20th century, yet received minimal international coverage. Modern Bangladesh-Pakistan relations remain tense; Bangladesh commemorates 1971 as genocide.
