On 14 August 1385, the outnumbered Portuguese army of John I, commanded by Nuno Álvares Pereira and aided by English archers, decisively defeated the invading Castilian army of John I of Castile at São Jorge near Aljubarrota. The victory secured Portuguese independence and ended the 1383-85 succession crisis.
