On 16 November 1532, Francisco Pizarro's force of fewer than 200 Spaniards ambushed and captured the Inca ruler Atahualpa in the plaza of Cajamarca, slaughtering thousands of his unarmed retinue and decapitating the Inca state in a single stroke.
