On 18 June 1053, the Normans of Apulia under Humphrey of Hauteville defeated a Swabian-Italian-Lombard army organised by Pope Leo IX near Civitate; the pope was captured. The victory consolidated Norman power in southern Italy and forced the papacy toward accommodation with the Normans.
