Fought 22 September 1866 during the War of the Triple Alliance, the Battle of Curupayty was a catastrophic frontal assault by Brazilian and Argentine forces on entrenched Paraguayan positions. The attackers suffered thousands of casualties against negligible Paraguayan losses, stalling the allied advance for nearly a year.
