On 11 May 1745, during the War of the Austrian Succession, the French army under Marshal Saxe defeated the Pragmatic Army of British, Dutch, Hanoverian and Austrian troops under the Duke of Cumberland near Tournai, leading to the French conquest of the Austrian Netherlands.
