The main event of Russia's 1880-81 campaign to conquer the Teke Turkmen, the Battle of Geok Tepe (January 1881) ended with General Skobelev storming the fortress and a massacre of fleeing Turkmen. It gave Russia control over most of present-day Turkmenistan, nearly completing the conquest of Central Asia.
