Fought in 1790 in the ʻĪao Valley of Maui, where Kamehameha I's forces, using cannon, decisively defeated the Maui army of Kalanikūpule. The slaughter was so great that the stream was said to be dammed with bodies, giving the battle its name ('the damming of the waters').
