On 29 July 1014, Byzantine Emperor Basil II destroyed the army of Tsar Samuel of Bulgaria in the Belasitsa mountain passes near Klyuch. Basil reportedly blinded thousands of captives, earning the epithet 'Bulgar-Slayer'; the defeat hastened the collapse of the First Bulgarian Empire.
