Diodorus gives c. 1,000 Theban and 4,000 allied dead; modern scholars favour roughly 300-500 per side. The decisive loss was Epaminondas himself.

The largest hoplite battle fought among Greek states, in which the Theban general Epaminondas defeated a Spartan-led coalition using his oblique-order tactics but was mortally wounded. His death left a power vacuum that paved the way for Macedonian ascendancy.
