479 BCE · Greek coalition (Sparta, Athens and allies) vs Achaemenid Persian Empire
Fought on the Ionian coast on (traditionally) the same day as Plataea, the Greek fleet and landing force destroyed the beached Persian fleet and army at Mycale. The victory triggered a renewed revolt of the Ionian Greek cities against Persia and shifted the Greco-Persian Wars onto the Greek offensive.
