On 7 July 1520, days after the disastrous Spanish retreat from Tenochtitlan (La Noche Triste), Hernan Cortes's battered force and Tlaxcalan allies defeated a large Aztec army on the plain near Otumba, allowing Cortes to regroup and eventually return to besiege the Aztec capital.
