On 10 September 1780, during the Second Anglo-Mysore War, Mysorean forces under Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan annihilated a British East India Company column under William Baillie near Pollilur, one of the Company's worst defeats in India and a notable use of iron-cased rockets.
