On 28 September 1538 an Ottoman fleet under Hayreddin Barbarossa defeated a numerically superior Holy League fleet under Andrea Doria off Preveza. The victory, with Djerba (1560), made the Ottomans the dominant naval power in the Mediterranean for thirty years.
