On 9 July 1386, the forces of the Old Swiss Confederacy defeated a Habsburg army near Sempach in Lucerne; Duke Leopold III of Austria and many Austrian nobles were killed. The victory was a turning point in consolidating Swiss independence from Habsburg overlordship.
