On the night of 4 February 1670 Maratha forces under Tanaji Malusare scaled the cliffs to storm the Mughal-held Sinhagad (Kondhana) fort near Pune for Shivaji. The fort was taken but Tanaji was killed, an event celebrated in Maratha tradition.
