On 28 June 1119, the Artuqid ruler Ilghazi of Mardin annihilated the field army of the Principality of Antioch under Roger of Salerno near the pass of Sarmada in northern Syria. Roger was killed and the crusader force was nearly destroyed, severely weakening Antioch.
