Alexander the Great defeated King Porus of the Pauravas on the banks of the Hydaspes River in the Punjab, his last great pitched battle and possibly his costliest. Despite victory, Alexander reinstated Porus as a satrap, and the campaign marked the easternmost limit of Macedonian conquest.
