On 31 May 1223, a Mongol reconnaissance army under Jebe and Subutai decisively defeated a coalition of Rus princes and Cumans on the Kalka River north of the Sea of Azov. The disaster was the first clash between the Rus and the Mongols, foreshadowing the full invasion of 1237-1240.
