In mid-April 1395, Timur (Tamerlane) defeated Tokhtamysh of the Golden Horde on the Terek River in the North Caucasus, the decisive battle of the Tokhtamysh-Timur war. Timur then sacked Sarai, Astrakhan and Azov, crippling the Golden Horde's power.
