On 12 August 1399, the Golden Horde forces of Temür Qutlugh and Edigu decisively defeated Grand Duke Vytautas of Lithuania and his ally Tokhtamysh on the Vorskla River near Poltava. Many Lithuanian and Ruthenian princes were killed, checking Lithuanian expansion into the steppe.
