Also called the Anglo-Satsuma War, this 15-17 August 1863 naval bombardment by a British squadron of Kagoshima sought compensation from the Satsuma Domain for the 1862 Namamugi Incident. The British lost 11 killed and Satsuma 5, and much of the city burned, but the clash paradoxically led to close British-Satsuma cooperation.
