In March 1697 a Spanish force under Martin de Ursua stormed Nojpeten (Tayasal), the island capital of the Itza Maya on Lake Peten Itza, ending the last independent Maya kingdom and completing the Spanish conquest of the Maya more than 170 years after it began.
