On 14 January 1191, the Rajput confederacy under Prithviraj Chauhan defeated the invading Ghurid forces of Muhammad of Ghor at Tarain (Taraori) north of Delhi, wounding Muhammad and forcing his retreat. The reprieve proved temporary, as the Ghurids returned and won the second battle in 1192.
