What happened

Topa Inca (1471-1493) conquered northern Ecuador and southern Chile territories. Huayna Capac (1493-1525) extended empire to maximal extent but faced succession disputes following his death. Northern expansion incorporated new ethnic groups and facilitated administrative integration.

Why it mattered

Expansion achieved Inca hegemony over the entire Andean region. The expanded empire became the target of Spanish conquest.
