What happened
Following Hamas' October 2023 attack on Israel and Israel's Gaza invasion, Iran (Hamas supporter) and Israel entered direct conflict (April 2024). Iran launched 300+ drones and missiles at Israel; most were intercepted. Israel struck Iranian military targets. Escalation raised fears of wider regional war and nuclear confrontation. As of 2024, tensions remain high with ongoing threats of further attacks. Limited direct combat deaths but enormous symbolic significance.
Why it mattered
The 2024 conflict marked Iran-Israel tensions' escalation from proxy wars to direct military exchanges. It demonstrated international weapons systems' sophistication (air defenses). The conflict raised fears of wider Middle Eastern war involving US, Israel, Iran, and potentially nuclear weapons. The conflict's resolution remains uncertain; de-escalation is unclear. Modern Middle East geopolitics are shaped by Iran-Israel antagonism; nuclear weapons make direct conflict catastrophic.
