900 CE – 1450 · Khmer Empire vs Champa
Centuries of conflict between Khmer Empire and Champa Kingdom over territorial dominance and tributary control.
Khmer and Champa kingdoms competed for mainland Southeast Asian dominance. Major Khmer victories included conquest of Champa territory. Champa, based on the Vietnamese coast, maintained naval power and resisted Khmer dominance. Wars involved siege warfare, naval operations, and capture of royal hostages.
The conflicts prevented either power from establishing permanent hegemony. Vietnamese expansion eventually absorbed Champa, establishing Vietnamese dominance.
