1000 – 1220 · Khmer Empire vs Champa
Centuries of conflict between Khmer Empire and Champa Kingdom over Indochinese territory and tributary control.
Khmer (Cambodian) and Champa (Vietnamese coast) kingdoms competed for regional dominance from the 10th century onward. Major Khmer victories included the conquest of Champa's capital Vijaya (1177) by Jayavarman VII's forces after Cham piracy. Subsequent centuries saw alternating dominance: Champa briefly gained the upper hand in the 13th century, while Khmer resurgent power in the 14th century shifted the balance. By the 15th century, Dai Viet (northern Vietnam) expansion, aided by Champa internal fragmentation, weakened Champa's position. Khmer conflicts also involved Thai kingdoms and internal Angkor instability.
Khmer-Champa conflicts prevented either power from establishing permanent hegemony over mainland Southeast Asia. The wars facilitated Vietnamese (Dai Viet) expansion southward, ultimately absorbing Champa by 1693. The conflict redirected Indochinese political geography.
