What happened

Han General Ma Yuan dispatched forces to suppress the Trung Sisters' rebellion. His military campaigns defeated Vietnamese resistance and reasserted Chinese administrative control. The conquest devastated Vietnamese populations but reestablished Chinese authority.

Why it mattered

Ma Yuan's victory reinforced Chinese rule but inspired centuries of Vietnamese resistance. The conflict presaged Vietnamese anti-colonial nationalism.
