1803 – 1815 · France vs United Kingdom vs Spain vs Austria
Napoleon's armies conquered most of Europe, redrew its borders, and sparked the modern nationalism that defined the 19th century.
French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802) and Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815) saw France dominate Europe under Napoleon. French armies swept east, reorganizing European states through direct rule and satellite kingdoms. Spain, Russia, and the Sixth Coalition ultimately defeated him. The Russian campaign (1812) destroyed Grande Armée; Waterloo (1815) ended his reign. Over 3 million soldiers and civilians died across 23 years of warfare. Every European power was mobilized.
Napoleon's meritocratic armies and civil law codes (Napoleonic Code) modernized European institutions and laid groundwork for democratic nationalism. His defeat created the Concert of Europe—a balance-of-power system that prevented major wars for 40 years. Nationalism, however, became increasingly ethnic rather than civic after his wars. His legacy inspired both liberal reform and reactionary conservatism. Imperial expansion and nationalist wars dominated the 19th century.
