1941 – 1945 · Japan vs United States vs Australia
Japan's Pacific War (1941-1945) killed 2-3 million in Asia's deadliest conflict—mostly through starvation and disease of civilians.
Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor (1941) initiated Pacific War. Japan rapidly conquered Southeast Asia and Pacific islands. US counteroffensive (island-hopping campaign, 1942-1945) gradually pushed Japan back. Battles at Midway (1942), Iwo Jima (1945), and Okinawa (1945) were catastrophically costly. Japan surrendered (August 1945) after Soviet entry and atomic bombings. Estimates: 2-3 million died (roughly 1-2 million civilians, 1 million+ soldiers). Disease and starvation killed more than combat. Japan's occupation of Southeast Asia killed millions through famine and forced labor.
The Pacific War was WWII's bloodiest theater in Asia. It demonstrated island-hopping strategy and amphibious assault tactics. The war showed atomic weapons' power and terror. The war devastated Japan's economy and civilian population. Japan's occupation of Asia created lasting resentments (Korea, China, Philippines, Indonesia). Post-war occupation by US led to Japan's transformation into democracy and economic powerhouse. The war established US dominance in Pacific. Modern East Asian tensions partly trace to WWII's unresolved grievances (Japan's historical denial, China's grievances). The war shaped how nuclear weapons entered modern consciousness.
