1654 – 1667 · Russia vs Poland

Centuries of conflict between Muscovy/Russia and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth reshaped Eastern European boundaries.

Russia and Poland-Lithuania competed for dominance over Eastern Europe, Belarus, and Ukraine. Major wars included Russo-Polish conflicts in the 16th-17th centuries, including the Time of Troubles (1598-1613) when Polish forces occupied Moscow. The 1654-1667 war, initiated by Cossack leader Bogdan Khmelnitski's alliance with Russia, resulted in Russian territorial gains and the incorporation of Ukraine into the Russian sphere. The Russo-Polish wars presaged Russian expansion westward.

Russo-Polish conflicts established Russian hegemony over Eastern European regions. The wars shifted Ukraine from Polish-Lithuanian to Russian influence. Russian victories presaged Russian dominance of Eastern Europe.
