What happened

Toungoo (Konbaung) Burma launched major invasion of Thailand. Burmese forces surrounded and besieged Ayutthaya, the Thai capital. The city fell in 1767; Burmese forces destroyed temples, palaces, and captured treasures. The sack devastated Thai civilization.

Why it mattered

Ayutthaya's destruction ended classical Thai dominance. The trauma initiated Thai cultural and political reorganization under the Chakri Dynasty.
