On 29 November 1864, Colonel John Chivington's Colorado Territory militia attacked a peaceful camp of Cheyenne and Arapaho under Black Kettle flying a white flag, killing an estimated 150-230 people, mostly women and children; the atrocity provoked widening Plains warfare.
