What happened

Serbian forces under leaders like Lazar Hrebeljanović conducted resistance against Ottoman conquest. Major battles at Kosovo (1389) and Maritza (1365) demonstrated Serbian military capacity. However, Ottoman military superiority and numerical advantages eventually overwhelmed Serbian resistance.

Why it mattered

Serbian resistance to Ottoman conquest presaged centuries of Christian-Muslim conflict in the Balkans. Serbian military heroism became foundational to Serbian national identity.
