Siege of Cusco

1536 – 1537 · Neo-Inca State (Manco Inca) vs Spanish Empire

From May 1536 to early 1537, the Inca emperor Manco Inca Yupanqui led a massive native army in a ten-month siege of Spanish-held Cusco, seizing the fortress of Sacsayhuaman before the smaller Spanish garrison under Hernando Pizarro broke the siege; its failure cemented Spanish control of the Andes.
