From 5 August to 8 September 1566 the Ottoman army under Suleiman the Magnificent besieged the Croatian-Hungarian fortress defended by Nikola Zrinski. Both Suleiman (of natural causes) and Zrinski died; the pyrrhic Ottoman victory halted the campaign against Vienna.
