Medieval Somali sultanates conducted warfare for control of coast, hinterland trade, and Islamic authority.

Somali sultanates including Adal, Ajuran, and others competed for dominance over East African territories. Wars involved territorial conquest, trade route control, and religious authority. Somali sultanates expanded southward against other indigenous peoples.

Somali sultanate conflicts established Somali predominance in the Horn of Africa. The sultanates' militarization presaged later confrontations with colonial powers.
