Timbuktu, a major Islamic learning center and trade hub, fell to Songhai military conquest. The conquest gave Songhai control of critical intellectual and commercial resources. Songhai maintained Timbuktu's Islamic institutions.

Timbuktu conquest consolidated Songhai dominance and demonstrated Songhai respect for Islamic learning.
