A guerrilla campaign waged from 1868 to 1872 by the prophet-leader Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki after escaping imprisonment on the Chatham Islands, including the 1868 Matawhero killings. Colonial and allied Māori forces pursued him for years before he escaped into the King Country.
